Why Shoot in Koh Samui?

Koh Samui is an island off the east coast of Thailand, part of Surat Thani Province. With an area of approximately 228 square kilometres, it is Thailand's second-largest island and one of the country's most established tropical shooting destinations. For a producer, Samui is interesting because you can get a lot of different looks without moving the entire production across the country. Beaches, coconut plantations, jungle, waterfalls, mountains, local roads, fishing villages, markets, luxury villas, resorts and modern hotels can all be found on the island. And Samui attracts a very wide range of productions.

At one end, you have a single videographer shooting a travel film, an independent project, a wedding or a beachside vlog with a small camera and a drone. At the other end, you can have a major international production with enough resources to control a beach, bring in a complete lighting and grip package, build a luxury villa set and, apparently, blow the whole thing up on the first take. Both are possible, the production approach is simply very different. For international productions, Samui also has a practical advantage: it is a proper tourist island with an international airport, established hotels, resorts, restaurants, roads and a developed hospitality infrastructure. That makes it considerably easier to accommodate a crew than on some of the smaller Thai islands.

We love Koh Samui, it is one of most beatiful places to shoot in Thailand, but as a production company, we would never tell a producer that every island scene has to be shot only in Samui. Thailand gives you plenty of alternatives, and the right choice depends on the script, visual references, crew size, logistics, budget and how much infrastructure the production needs. Depending on the project, we can also look at locations such as Koh Lipe, Koh Larn, Koh Chang and Koh Phangan. And sometimes the most practical answer is not an island at all — Phuket can offer tropical beaches and island-style locations while giving the production a much larger local infrastructure and a wider choice of accommodation, crew, equipment and transport. Koh Lipe can give you that small, remote-island feeling with beautiful beaches and clear water, but the logistics are naturally more complicated once you start bringing serious equipment and a larger crew. Koh Larn is much closer to Bangkok and Pattaya, which can make it useful for smaller productions looking for a tropical beach without committing to the logistics of travelling all the way to Samui. Koh Chang gives you a different combination of jungle, mountains, beaches and less-developed locations, and can work very well when the production needs a more natural environment. Koh Phangan is right next door to Samui geographically, but visually and atmospherically it can feel quite different. Depending on the story, that difference can be exactly what you are looking for. Phuket is another completely valid option. It has a much larger production ecosystem, more accommodation and transport options, a broad range of locations and easier access to professional crew and equipment. If the project is large and logistics are a major consideration, Phuket may make more sense than moving everything to a smaller island. But if the brief says tropical Thailand, beautiful beaches, coconut palms, mountains, villas and that particular island atmosphere — Samui is still the favourite and once you decide on Samui, the next question is not really whether you can shoot there. You can. The real production question is: what are we bringing from Bangkok, what can we hire locally, which crew should fly, which crew should travel with the equipment, and what needs to arrive on the island before the first shooting day? That is where the video production planning starts.
